Cambodian Adoption Program
Available Children: The beautiful children that are available for adoption from Cambodia range in age from newborn to eight years.  Most are placed in government-run orphanages due to abandonment, poverty or death of a mother.  Very rarely are they placed there because of abuse or neglect.  The ratio of boys to girls is generally estimated to be 7 boys for every girl, therefore, families open to the adoption of a boy normally received a referral much more quickly.
Parental Requirements:  Singles, male or female, between the ages 40 to 50 and married couples between the ages of 25 to 50 may adopt.  Families with up to two children may adopt, provided the two children have not been adopted from Cambodia.  Childless applicants must be open to receiving either a boy or a girl.  Families who already have a boy may request a girl.  Single men can adopt boys only at this time.  Single women with no children may request a girl, but if adopting for a second time, single women must be willing to accept a boy or an older toddler girl.
Travel Requirements:  Each family is required to make one trip to Cambodia to bring home their child.  If both parents travel, the adoption is complete in Cambodia, the child has a permanent visa and citizenship is automatic.  If both parents do not travel, the child must be readopted in the US.  The typical length of stay is 3 to 7 days.
Cherished Children's Cambodian facilitator places children from Roteang, Cham Chao, Kompong Speu and The Nutrition Center.  The children typically stay in the orphanages for a brief period of time and the ratio of caregivers to children is usually quite good.  Prior to being placed with a family, all children are given a medical evaluation to ensure their good health.  Tests include screening for HIV, Syphilis and Hepatitis B & C.  Parents can request repeated medical tests to confirm initial results.
