Requirements to Adopt: Prospective adoptive parents must be between the ages of 30 and 55. The minimum income requirement is $30,000 for couples without children: $10,000 per additional family member.
The Children of China: Children in China available for adoption have been abandoned and reside in orphanages due to the one-child law in China. Many children have good prenatal care and have been born in hospitals. Minor developmental delays due many are expected but the health of most children is good. 97% of children adopted from China are girls. The median age of children at the time of their referral is between age eight to sixteen months Applicants under the age of 45 will generally receive a child under 18 months. Applicants over age 45 need to be open to a child which could be 4-5 years old.
The Adoption Process: Completion of your Dossier takes approximately 2-3 months. Upon completion of your dossier it is then sent for processing and authentication before being before being sent to China. Referrals take approximately 8-10 months after the dossier is received in China. When you receive your referral it includes 3-5 photos, medical information, daily routine, some personal info and developmental information. Only one child may be adopted at a time.
Travel: Approximately 4-6 weeks after receiving your referral you should be able to travel to China to complete your adoption and receive your child. Only one family member must travel to China for approximately 10 days. An optional sightseeing trip to Beijing is available, which would add several days to length of stay. During this time you may visit the Great Wall of China, Tienman Square, the Forbidden City, and the Summer Palace. During your trip bilingual Chinese representatives are with you to guide you through the entire adoption process. This includes the local adoption process, accommodations, transportation, translation, and anything else you may need during your stay.
